Welcome to Flutter Farm! Thanks for stopping by. We are a small hobby breeder and exhibitor of cockatiels located in central PA, NCS band code 42F.
How did we get started? It started with one little bird named Tiki. In 2006, my 10 year old daughter wanted to use her birthday money for her very own pet. We went through her wish list - Ferret, Guinea Pig, Bird. We researched parakeets online, and decided to find a breeder who hand raises parakeets, as we wanted a hand tamed baby for her first bird. What a great experience that was. We waited for eggs to hatch, we visited the breeder every week to learn how to handle and care for our new pet! When Tiki was finally ready to come home, we had no idea just how much our life was about to change! One bird led to another and before we knew it we were hooked! In March 2007, my daughter purchased what was to be our first cockatiel, Bugsy, using her birthday money. Shortly after that I purchased my first cockatiel, Piper, from a private breeder. Sadly, Bugsy ended up being in poor health and he passed later that year. September 2007 we went to our first Cockatiel Show to learn more about breeding and exhibiting cockatiels. We met a wonderful person that day and visited her aviary and after a few visits, we had a great beginning to our flock. 2008 we set up our very first pair, and it was time for my daughter to choose a baby to fill the void that was left after Bugsy's passing. She chose to keep our very first hatch, a cinnamon male, and named him Magellan. At 6 months old, Magellan attended his first Cockatiel Show , placing 2nd Best Novice and winning the Judge's Choice Award. Cinnamon quickly became one of our favorite mutations. Peridot (Peri), a beautiful Cinnamon hen, hatched in 2014 and is Magellan's niece. She began showing in Spring of 2015 , earning several Best in Shows throughout the year. Showing in her first National Bird Show, in St. Charles, IL December, 2015, Peri took Best in Show and the Higgins Award. |
